The Jolly Balloon Man Commander Guide - Combos, Synergies, and Absolute Chaos
Share
Let's talk about the most unhinged Commander in Duskmourn. A 1/4 Legendary Human Clown for 1BR with haste who hands out flying balloon copies of your creatures like party favors at a nightmare carnival. The Jolly Balloon Man is weird, explosive, and genuinely terrifying to play against when built correctly.
This is a full breakdown of how to build around him, what combos to run, and which synergies make the Balloon Man go from fun gimmick to legitimate threat at the table.
Understanding the Ability
For 1 mana and a tap, The Jolly Balloon Man creates a token that's a copy of another creature you control - except it's a 1/1 red Balloon creature with flying and haste in addition to its other types and colors. The token is sacrificed at the beginning of the next end step, and the ability can only be activated as a sorcery.
The key things to understand:
- The token copies the creature's abilities, not just its stats - so ETB triggers fire again
- Flying and haste are added on top of whatever the original creature has
- The token dies at end of turn guaranteed - which is actually a feature, not a bug
- It's a sorcery-speed activation, so plan ahead during your main phase
- The Jolly Balloon Man himself has haste, so he can activate the turn he enters
The Core Strategy
The Balloon Man's colors are Rakdos (red and black), which gives you access to some of the best ETB creatures, sacrifice payoffs, and haste enablers in the game. The deck wants to do two things: generate value from ETB triggers by copying your best creatures, and exploit the guaranteed death of balloon tokens for sacrifice synergies.
Think of every balloon token as a free sacrifice trigger waiting to happen. You're not losing a creature - you're cashing in a chip.
Best ETB Creatures to Copy
These are the creatures you want on the battlefield when the Balloon Man activates. Each one generates immediate value the moment the token enters.
Dockside Extortionist - The most powerful ETB in Commander. Copy it with a balloon token and you could generate a massive burst of Treasure tokens in a single turn. The token dies at end of turn but the Treasures stay. This is your premier target in any game where opponents have artifacts and enchantments.
Solemn Simulacrum - Copy it, get a land into play, and when the balloon token dies at end of turn you draw a card. Two pieces of value from one activation. Sad Robot has never been happier.
Zealous Conscripts - Copy it and steal any permanent your opponent controls until end of turn. Attack with it, use its ability, and watch it disappear at end of turn. Repeatable theft every turn the Balloon Man is active.
Combustible Gearhulk - Copy it, trigger the ETB, and either draw three cards or deal damage equal to their mana costs. Flying haste on the token means it can also attack immediately before it pops.
Grave Titan - Copy it and get two 2/2 Zombie tokens that stick around permanently even after the balloon dies. You're trading a temporary token for two permanent creatures every single turn.
Sacrifice Synergies - Turning Death Into Value
Every balloon token is going to die. That's guaranteed. The best Balloon Man builds treat this as an engine rather than a downside.
Mayhem Devil - Every time a permanent is sacrificed, Mayhem Devil deals 1 damage to any target. Your balloon tokens dying at end of turn triggers this every single turn. In a long game this adds up to a shocking amount of damage.
Zulaport Cutthroat - Whenever a creature you control dies, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life. Balloon tokens dying triggers this. Stack multiple death triggers and you're draining the table passively every turn cycle.
Dictate of Erebos - Whenever a creature you control dies, each opponent sacrifices a creature. Your balloon tokens dying forces your opponents to sacrifice their own creatures. Every. Single. Turn. This card turns the Balloon Man into a board control engine.
Syr Konrad, the Grim - Deals 1 damage to each opponent whenever a creature dies or leaves a graveyard. Balloon tokens dying triggers this. With multiple tokens dying per turn cycle, Syr Konrad becomes a passive damage machine.
Ashnod's Altar - Sacrifice a creature for two colorless mana. Instead of waiting for balloon tokens to die at end of turn, sacrifice them yourself for mana during your turn. Use that mana to activate the Balloon Man again or cast more spells.
Token Doublers - More Balloons, More Chaos
If one balloon token is good, two is better. These cards double your output from every Balloon Man activation.
Doubling Season - If a token would be created, create twice that many instead. One Balloon Man activation becomes two balloon tokens. Two ETB triggers. Two death triggers. This card is the single biggest multiplier in the deck.
Parallel Lives - Same effect as Doubling Season for tokens only, at a lower mana cost. Stack both and one activation creates four tokens.
Anointed Procession - White isn't in the color identity but worth noting for five-color builds. For Rakdos, Parallel Lives and Doubling Season are your go-to doublers.
Haste Enablers - Activate Immediately
The Balloon Man already has haste, but giving haste to the creatures you're copying means your balloon tokens come in ready to attack and use tap abilities immediately.
Swiftfoot Boots / Lightning Greaves - Protect the Balloon Man and keep him on the battlefield. He's your engine. Keep him safe.
Fires of Yavimaya - Gives all your creatures haste. Not in Rakdos colors but worth a splash if you're going four-color. In straight Rakdos, Hammer of Purphoros does the same job.
Hammer of Purphoros - Gives all creatures you control haste and can create Golem tokens as a bonus. Fits perfectly in the Rakdos color identity.
The Combo Corner
Balloon Man + Dockside Extortionist + Ashnod's Altar - Copy Dockside with a balloon token, generate Treasure tokens, sacrifice the balloon to Ashnod's Altar for two mana, use that mana plus Treasures to activate Balloon Man again. In a game with enough artifacts and enchantments on the other side of the table, this loop generates enormous mana and repeated ETB triggers.
Balloon Man + Grave Titan + Dictate of Erebos - Copy Grave Titan each turn for two free Zombies. When the balloon dies, Dictate of Erebos forces each opponent to sacrifice a creature. You're building an army while dismantling theirs simultaneously.
Balloon Man + Mayhem Devil + Parallel Lives - Two balloon tokens die at end of turn instead of one. Mayhem Devil triggers twice per turn cycle. Over a long game this is 2+ damage per turn to any target, every turn, for free.
Balloon Man + Syr Konrad + Any Death Doubler - Stack Syr Konrad with Parallel Lives and watch the passive damage output scale rapidly. Each balloon token dying hits every opponent for 1. Two tokens dying per activation hits for 2. Add more death triggers and the math gets scary fast.

Why This Commander Is Secretly Terrifying
On the surface The Jolly Balloon Man looks like a fun casual commander. A clown handing out balloon animals. How threatening could it be?
The answer is very. A resolved Balloon Man with the right creatures on board generates free ETB value every turn, builds a sacrifice engine that drains opponents passively, and can close out games through sheer attrition before anyone realizes what happened. The flying haste on tokens means you always have an attacker. The guaranteed death means your sacrifice payoffs always trigger.
He's not the flashiest commander in the format. But he's consistent, resilient, and deeply weird - which is exactly what makes him fun to pilot and frustrating to play against.
