Building a Commander Deck: The Blueprint Every Player Needs
Share
Structure your 100 cards the right way before you ever think about your win condition.
There's a reason Commander is the most popular format in Magic: The Gathering. A hundred cards. One legendary commander. Infinite ways to build.
But infinite options can be paralyzing. Where do you even start?
The answer is structure. Before you think about your theme, your combos, or your win condition -- you need a blueprint. And the most battle-tested framework in the format comes from the minds behind The Command Zone podcast.
Here's how it works.
The Commander Deck Blueprint
Think of your 100 cards in three buckets:
Lands: 35-38 cards
Your mana base is the foundation of everything. Too few and you'll stumble. Too many and your draws go dead late game. 36 is the sweet spot for most decks. Adjust up if your commander is mana-hungry, down if you're running heavy ramp.
Support: 30-35 cards
This is the engine that keeps your deck running regardless of your strategy. It includes:
- Ramp (10-12 cards) -- Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, land fetchers. Get ahead on mana, stay ahead.
- Card Draw (10-12 cards) -- Rhystic Study, Phyrexian Arena, Harmonize. Never run out of gas.
- Removal (10-12 cards) -- Single target and board wipes. Answer threats before they end you.
Theme/Strategy: ~30 cards
This is where your deck becomes yours. These are the cards that execute your game plan, support your commander's identity, and close out games. Your win conditions live here.
Why This Works
Commander games go long. You'll face three opponents, unexpected threats, and board states you never planned for. A deck without enough lands floods out. A deck without enough draw runs dry. A deck without enough removal gets steamrolled.
The blueprint ensures your deck can function in any game state -- so your strategy actually gets to execute.
Start Here, Then Break the Rules
This template is a starting point, not a cage. Combo decks run fewer lands. Stax decks warp the support ratios. Some commanders are so powerful they bend the whole structure around them.
But if you're building a new deck -- especially your first Commander deck -- start with the blueprint. Get it on the table. Play ten games. Then start cutting and tuning based on what you actually experience.
The best Commander decks aren't built. They're evolved.
What's your Commander of choice? Drop it in the comments -- we might feature it in a future Codex entry.
